A New Look

How do you like the new widget I've added to the blog? I discovered this new widget through a website called "Shelfari" (http://www.shelfari.com/). I am taking an on-line course and someone shared this with me during on-line discussions. I think it's kind of neat. You create a virtual bookshelf to show everyone what books you've read, what you are currently reading and which ones you are in love with!! If you run the cursor over top of the books showing on my "bookshelf" you will get some more information about them. You can also use the buttons at the bottom of the shelf to scroll through all the books I've included. I'll try to only include books that I know we have in the WCSS Library. Then if you see something you like, you can check it out!!

Our Make a Match contest is now over. Congratulations to Kim and Jenn who worked together and got 9 out 10 correct answers. The girls received a $10 gift card for Chapters.

Keep watching the shelves for a new display of "Teacher Faves" in the coming weeks.

Happy Reading :)

Recommended Read

Title: A Great and Terrible Beauty

Author: Libba Bray

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Gemma Doyle is a 16 year old who suddenly finds herself at a boarding school in London after the death of her mother. Set in the Victorian age, Gemma struggles to comply with the school rules and fit in with the other students. Visions of the future begin as Gemma discovers her mother's connection to an alternate-world. Together with three classmates, Gemma enters this world and together they find what each wants most...love, beauty, power and self-knowledge.

This book was suggested to me by a student at West. She encouraged me to read it this summer and I really enjoyed it. The time period in which the novel is set is a perfect backdrop for the fantasy element of the story. I also discovered that there is a second and third book to this series. I am currently reading "Rebel Angels" on West Reads! days and the third book is on the Library Wishlist...I'll keep you posted. "A Great and Terrible Beauty" is currently on our bookshelves...what are you waiting for...come check it out!!

I was so excited today when I discovered that people have actually visited this blog!! It has inspired me to add another posting.

Did you know that you can sign out up to 6 books at a time from our library?!! That should be more than enough to keep you going for the 3 week loan period. Magazines can be borrowed as well, but they only have a loan period of 1 week. West Reads! happens every Wednesday...be sure to visit the library if you need some reading material.

I hope you are gearing up for a fantastic long weekend...yum...turkey!! Keep your eyes open for a new contest starting next week in the library...think books and teachers!!

All-Time Favourites

Have you got a favourite book? One that you've read over and over and still love it? Tell us about it here. Leave a comment telling everyone which book is your all-time fave, who the author is and why you love it.

My favourite is "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. I love the characters, especially Scout. The first time I read this book, I was quite young. I started reading it to my older cousin who enjoyed hearing a book being read to him as opposed to reading it himself. He was in high school and had to read the book for his English class. A few years later, I had to do the same for my own English class and ever since it has been my favourite.

Don't be shy...leave a comment :)

Stephenie Meyer Survey

I thought we would start things off with a quick survey. Add your results to the poll on the side of the page.

I started reading the Twilight series this summer and I was instantly hooked! I am almost finished the fourth and final book, Breaking Dawn. I'm not usually a fan of fantasy novels, but this author has renewed my interest in them. I truly cannot wait until the movie is released in November. Have you seen the preview? Check out the link here.

What do you think of the Twilight series? Have you read all of them? Which one is your favourite and why? Leave a comment and share your thoughts!
